RIPYT

Celebrities and other fashion-forward people have recently been paying homage to Michael Jackson in their choice of clothing; the trend now seems strangely premonitory. Rihanna (above) and Beyonce (below) love the structured and blingey blazers by Balmain that were undoubtedly inspired by MJ's garment of choice during the 1980s.

Even Jacko himself was getting back into his old habits, wearing lots of sequins and studs perhaps in preparation for his come back tour. Below he was seen wearing a piece from the Balmain collection he had unknowingly played muse for.

With the tragic loss of the King of Pop I suspect that in tribute to his greatness, the trend will only grow stronger and more pronounced.

Along with daring rhinestone encrusted civil war jackets, we might see white socks with penny-loafers and black jeans returning, as well as easier to pull-off classic items:

Slightly oversized shades for the eternally shy superstar, like these from Karen Walker Eyewear

Pretty shiny things limited to accessories, instead of an all over look, like this rhinestoned bangle, Balmainesque ssquishy cuff, and spike stretch bracelet

and fedoras, to tip down when moonwalking.

All these looks and more are available at Helianthus, on La Guardia Place and Spring Street!

Cocktail Hour!!!!

HIP HIP HOORAY for the cocktail dress! That fantastic dress that hangs in your closet and begs to be worn on a fabulous night out. Its sexy and fun and makes you feel like a million bucks! What could be better. You slip into that dress and your ready to party! The cocktail dress has made every woman feel the glamour of a night out on the town since its introduction in the 1920s.

Laird Borrelli-Persson, author of the newly released book entitled The Cocktail Dress, showcases these fantastic frocks through out the decades while highlighting some of her favorites and getting insight from top designers such as Peter Som, Cynthia Rowley and Isaac Mizrahi, all of whom are experts on the art of the cocktail dress.

The cocktail dress can be classic and timeless or it can make a statement for the here and now crowd! Here at Helianthus we thought we’d follow in Laird Borrellis-Persson’s footsteps by picking some of our all time fave cocktail dresses worn by the most fabulous women of this century!

It all started with the Flapper of the 1920s and 30s. Every flapper dress was dazzling with fringe, beading, and lace!

Marilyn Monroe is a fashion icon...and its no wonder why! She always looked fantastic. Here she is in the classic film Some Like It Hot! Looking very hot indeed in this flapper style dress!
Audrey Hepburn is another icon in the fashion industry! She made "The Little Black Dress" a must have for every woman in America. Here she is in the classic hit film "Breakfast at Tiffany's"

Jackie O always looked classic...and wore beautifully tailored cocktail dresses. Sometimes it is the shape of a dress that really makes it a knock out and this is a perfect example of cocktail perfection!

Twiggy was the face of the 1960's modeling scene and got to wear some of the most out standing fashions of the 60s. Here she is in a dazzling cocktail dress, covered in beaded detailing!

Princess Diana looks amazing in this little back number! OUTSTANDING!

How could we not mention every city girls favorite fictional character...Carrie Bradshaw from HBO's hit series Sex and the City! This is a shot of her from the Sex and the City movie looking stylish as ever in this aqua blue cocktail masterpiece!

Sex and the City was all about the cocktail dress...AND THE COCKTAIL! The show reinvented "The Cosmopolitan" and made it every girls favorite drink!

Our new style Icon is Michelle Obama...first lady of the United States. Sometimes it is the color that makes a dress a knock out! This green dress by Kai Milla is a perfect example.

Here's the first lady looking fabulous in a yellow dress by Jason Wu...one of her favorite designers!

She wears her little black dress too! And does so with style and grace!
